Industries · How moving companies get recommended by ChatGPT and AI search
People ask AI how to avoid a moving scam. Then they ask who to hire.
Moving is expensive, infrequent and has a reputation problem, so customers research carefully. Assistants answering "how do I find a reputable mover" point to registration numbers, estimate types and reviews. Movers who publish those facts get recommended.

What people ask AI assistants
- “Reputable movers in [city] for a 2-bedroom apartment”
- “How do I check if a moving company is legitimate?”
- “Long distance movers from [city] to [city] with binding estimates”
- “How much do local movers cost per hour in [city]?”
Why does AI search matter for moving companies?
In the US, interstate household-goods movers must be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and have a USDOT number, and the FMCSA runs a consumer site, Protect Your Move, that tells people to check it. Assistants repeat that advice. A mover that shows its number up front makes the check easy.
Estimates are the next question. Binding and non-binding estimates mean different things for the final bill, and customers ask about them. A page that explains which you offer, in plain words, is a strong citation.
Local moves and long-distance moves are different searches. Pages that say which routes and move sizes you handle give an assistant something specific to match.
What we know so far
Full report and method →We haven't scanned moving companies websites yet, so we won't quote numbers for them. Our first study covered 101 dentist, law-firm and home-service sites. The gaps below are the ones we check for on every small-business site, adapted to how moving companies are usually found.
The moving company checklist
Things to do this week, roughly in order.
- Show your USDOT number (interstate) or state licence (local) on every page footer.
- Explain the estimate types you offer and how the final price is worked out.
- Publish local hourly rates or ranges, minimums and what adds cost.
- List the services you do and don't offer: packing, storage, pianos, long-distance routes.
- Add MovingCompany schema with areaServed and telephone.
- Make your claims and damage policy easy to find.
What are the common mistakes, and the fixes?
- 01
USDOT or state licence number missing
If you do interstate moves, show your USDOT number (and MC number if you have one) on the site as text. For local moves, show any state licence.
- 02
Estimate types not explained
Say whether you give binding, non-binding or not-to-exceed estimates, and whether you do in-home or video surveys.
- 03
Pricing that's all "get a quote"
Hourly rates for local moves, minimums and what changes the price (stairs, packing, long carries) are what people ask. Give ranges.
- 04
No MovingCompany schema
Add MovingCompany with telephone, areaServed and hours.
