Industries · How hair salons get recommended by ChatGPT and AI search
Clients ask AI who's good with curly hair, colour corrections or balayage. Say so.
Salon questions are about a specific result and a specific stylist: "who does good blonde balayage near me", "salon that cuts curly hair dry". Assistants can only match a salon to that if the site names the services and the people doing them.

What people ask AI assistants
- “Salon in [city] that specialises in curly hair”
- “Best place for balayage in [neighbourhood]”
- “How much is a colour correction in [city]?”
- “Hair salon near me open Sunday with online booking”
Why does AI search matter for hair salons?
People choose a salon for a stylist and a technique, not for the building. An assistant answering "who's good at curly cuts" looks for a page that names the technique, the stylist and how to book them.
Many salon sites send every service and price to a booking platform. That works for booking, but the platform's page may then be the thing an assistant reads and cites, not yours, and some widgets don't show crawlers the content at all.
Google can show a booking button on your Business Profile if you use a supported booking partner. That covers the booking. Your own site has to cover the reasons to choose you.
What we know so far
Full report and method →We haven't scanned hair salons websites yet, so we won't quote numbers for them. Our first study covered 101 dentist, law-firm and home-service sites. The gaps below are the ones we check for on every small-business site, adapted to how hair salons are usually found.
The hair salon checklist
Things to do this week, roughly in order.
- Publish your service menu with starting prices as an HTML page.
- Give each stylist a short bio that names their specialities.
- Name the techniques and hair types you're good with (curly cuts, colour correction, extensions) in plain words.
- Caption a handful of portfolio photos on your own site.
- Add HairSalon schema with hours, priceRange and a link to booking.
- Keep hours identical on your site, Google Business Profile and booking app.
What are the common mistakes, and the fixes?
- 01
Service menu only inside the booking app
Keep the booking app, but publish your service menu with starting prices on your own site as text too.
- 02
Stylists without pages
A short paragraph per stylist (what they're known for, which services they do) is what lets an assistant answer "who's good at" questions.
- 03
Instagram as the portfolio
Your best work may be on Instagram, which assistants read poorly. Put a few captioned examples on your site: service, hair type, stylist.
- 04
No HairSalon schema
Add HairSalon with address, hours, priceRange and sameAs links to your booking and social profiles.
