Industries · How insurance agents get recommended by ChatGPT and AI search
People ask AI whether to use an independent agent. Make your agency the obvious one.
Insurance shoppers ask assistants comparison questions ("independent agent or buy direct?", "who writes homeowners insurance near the coast?") before they ask for a name. Agencies that state which carriers and lines they write get matched to those questions.

What people ask AI assistants
- “Independent insurance agent in [city] who can quote several carriers”
- “Who sells homeowners insurance in [coastal town] after the big carriers left?”
- “Cheapest way to get an SR-22 in [state]”
- “Small business insurance agent near me for contractors”
Why does AI search matter for insurance agents?
Insurance questions are comparison questions. An assistant explaining captive versus independent agents will name agencies whose sites make the distinction clear: which carriers you represent and which lines you write.
Agents are licensed by state, and each producer has a National Producer Number. Listing the states you're licensed in answers a question every out-of-state shopper has.
Hard-to-place risks (coastal homes, young drivers, specific trades) are where a knowledgeable local agent beats a direct website. Pages on those situations are both useful and citable.
What we know so far
Full report and method →We haven't scanned insurance agents websites yet, so we won't quote numbers for them. Our first study covered 101 dentist, law-firm and home-service sites. The gaps below are the ones we check for on every small-business site, adapted to how insurance agents are usually found.
The insurance agency checklist
Things to do this week, roughly in order.
- List the carriers you represent as text, and say whether you're captive or independent.
- Give each line of insurance you write its own page.
- State the states you're licensed in.
- Write a page for each hard-to-place situation you're good at.
- Say what a customer needs to get a quote and how long it usually takes.
- Add InsuranceAgency schema with address, telephone and areaServed.
What are the common mistakes, and the fixes?
- 01
Carriers shown as a logo wall
List the carriers you represent as text. A logo strip tells an assistant nothing.
- 02
Lines of insurance lumped together
Home, auto, life, commercial and specialty lines each deserve a page that says who it's for and what you need to quote.
- 03
Licensed states not stated
Say which states you're licensed in. It's a direct answer to "can you insure me if I live in X?".
- 04
No InsuranceAgency schema
Add InsuranceAgency with address, telephone, hours and areaServed.
