How to appear in Google AI Overviews (and why there's no secret trick)

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode have no extra requirements beyond normal Search. Here's what that means in practice and the checklist that matters.

There's a cottage industry selling "AI Overview optimisation". Google's own documentation is unusually blunt about it: there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimisation is needed. To be eligible as a supporting link, a page just has to be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet.

That's good news for a small business. Being in AI Overviews comes down to being a healthy, indexable, clearly written page.

What Google actually lists

Google's "AI features and your website" guide names these fundamentals:

  • Crawling allowed in robots.txt, and by your CDN or hosting setup
  • Content that's easy to find through internal links
  • A good page experience
  • Important content available as text, not only in images or video
  • Structured data that matches what's visible on the page
  • An up-to-date Merchant Center and Business Profile

It also says plainly that you don't need new machine-readable files, "AI text files" or special schema.org markup to appear. (We still think llms.txt is worth twenty minutes for other AI tools, but it won't move Google.)

Mistakes that quietly disqualify you

  • Blocking Google-Extended and expecting it to change AI Overviews. Google-Extended controls Gemini training and grounding in Gemini apps and Vertex AI. Google says it doesn't affect inclusion in Search. AI Overviews are controlled by Googlebot, like the rest of Search.
  • A stray noindex or nosnippet. Snippet controls also limit what appears in AI features. If a page can't have a snippet, it can't be a supporting link.
  • Firewall rules that block Googlebot. Aggressive bot protection sometimes catches real crawlers. Check Search Console's crawl stats if traffic drops after a security change.
  • Thin pages. AI answers are assembled from pages that answer the question. A services page with three bullet points gives the system nothing to quote.

How to tell if you're showing up

Search Console has a Generative AI performance report that shows how your pages do in AI features on Search and Discover. Check it alongside the queries you care about, and look at those queries by hand now and then.

A 15-minute version

  1. Run the SEO Health Snapshot on your homepage and your top service page. Fix anything marked red, especially indexability and "Text in the HTML".
  2. Run the AI Crawler Checker to make sure Googlebot isn't caught by a broad rule.
  3. Verify the site in Google Search Console if you haven't already.
  4. Rewrite your main pages to answer the questions customers actually ask, in full sentences.
